Volker Türk seeks an independent probe into a UN rights staffer's death in Houthi custody

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on 31 October for an independent investigation into the death of Mohammad el Shami, a staff member of his office in Yemen. The Houthi de facto authorities had held him arbitrarily since 6 June 2024, when 13 UN staff were seized in a wave of raids. His family say he died more than a month before they were told. Türk urged the Houthis to hand over medical and detention records, preserve evidence and allow independent scrutiny. He said seven colleagues from his own office are still held. As of mid-October the UN counted 71 of its personnel in Houthi detention, and OCHA says more than 22 million people in Yemen need aid this year.

Why it matters for exams: The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), its present head Volker Türk and the Houthi-held north of Yemen are recurring world-affairs facts.
