Denmark, Greenland and the United States signed an Arctic security agreement on 22 September 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
It was signed by US President Donald J. Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
The agreement gives the United States permanent basing rights and lets it modernise and expand the Pituffik Space Base, with new bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
The accord has no end date; if Greenland becomes independent it stays bound by the agreement while remaining in NATO.
Countries outside NATO may not set up military installations in Greenland without the unanimous approval of all three parties.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the deal was reached with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.
