A founding member since 1958, in the euro and in Schengen: Belgium in the European Union

Belgium is in the news for its federal budget talks, which are framed by European Union fiscal rules, so its place in the Union is worth setting out. The European Union's own country page records that Belgium has been a member since 1 January 1958, making it one of the six founding states. Its capital is Brussels. Its currency is the euro, and it has been in the euro area since 1 January 1999. It has been in the Schengen area since 26 March 1995. Belgium sends 22 members to the European Parliament. Its official European Union languages are Dutch, French and German.

Three Regions and three Communities in 30,667 square kilometres: how Belgium divides power

Belgium's regional and federal ministers travelled together on the royal State Visit to Kazakhstan this month, which is the clearest picture of how the country is built. The European Union's country page describes Belgium as a federal constitutional monarchy, with a King as head of state and a Prime Minister as head of government. Power is split across the federal government, three language-based Communities and three Regions. The three Regions are Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region. The country covers 30,667 square kilometres and the page gives its population as 11,955,308. Its capital is Brussels and its official languages are Dutch, French and German.

Belgium is a founding member of NATO of 1949 and hosts its headquarters in Brussels

Belgium's capital is in the news as the seat of European decision-making, and it is also the home of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO's own member list records Belgium's accession in 1949, the year the alliance was founded, which makes it one of the twelve original parties to the North Atlantic Treaty. NATO states that its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium. The alliance now has 32 member countries. The most recent to join were Finland in 2023 and Sweden in 2024.

From the Flemish Beguinages to the flint mines at Spiennes: Belgium's World Heritage properties

Belgium's heritage cities are back in view as autumn storms close parks and squares across the country, so its World Heritage record is worth knowing. UNESCO lists 16 World Heritage properties in Belgium: 15 cultural and 1 natural. The cultural properties include the Flemish Beguinages, La Grand-Place in Brussels, the Historic Centre of Brugge, the Belfries of Belgium and France, the Neolithic Flint Mines at Spiennes near Mons, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Tournai, the Major Town Houses of the Architect Victor Horta in Brussels, the Plantin-Moretus House-Workshops-Museum Complex, Stoclet House, the Major Mining Sites of Wallonia, the Four Lifts on the Canal du Centre, the Colonies of Benevolence, the Great Spa Towns of Europe, the Funerary and memory sites of the First World War on the Western Front, and Belgium's share of the Architectural Work of Le Corbusier. The single natural property is Belgium's part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.

A square with no church, rebuilt after the bombardment of 1695: La Grand-Place in Brussels

Brussels is in the news as the city where Belgium's budget talks and European meetings are held, and its central square is on the World Heritage List. UNESCO inscribed La Grand-Place, Brussels, in 1998 under criteria (ii) and (iv). The property covers 1.48 hectares with a buffer zone of 20.93 hectares. It is a cobbled rectangular market square holding a remarkably homogeneous body of public and private buildings dating mainly from the late seventeenth century, among them the Gothic City Hall with its bell tower and the King's House, rebuilt in the historicist style. The surrounding guild houses carry Baroque gables and gold decoration. The square was rebuilt after the bombardment of 1695 by the troops of Louis XIV. It contains no church or other place of worship, which reflects its mercantile and administrative character.

Birthplace of the Flemish Primitives, 410 hectares of brick Gothic: the Historic Centre of Brugge

Bruges, in West Flanders, was under a code orange storm warning this week, and its old centre is one of Belgium's World Heritage properties. UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Brugge in 2000 under criteria (ii), (iv) and (vi). The property covers 410 hectares with a buffer zone of 168 hectares. It is a medieval town that has kept its historic street pattern, its canal network and its Gothic buildings while remaining a living city. Its features include the central Market Place with its belfry, the Beguinage, and historic hospitals and commercial buildings. Four of the twelfth-century city gates survive. UNESCO records Brugge as the birthplace of the Flemish Primitive school of painting, whose artists include Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling.

Diamonds, a Joint Economic Commission with BLEU and ties since 1947: India and Belgium

Belgium's foreign engagements are in the news this month, so its long relationship with India is worth setting down. The Embassy of India in Brussels records that Belgium was among the first European countries to recognise independent India, in September 1947. It states that trade in diamonds dominates the bilateral trade, and puts total Belgium-India trade at 8.33 billion euros in 2020, with Indian exports of 4.46 billion euros and imports of 3.87 billion euros. The India-BLEU Joint Economic Commission, set up in 1997 with the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union, is the main forum for economic and commercial matters. The Indian community in Belgium is put at about 24,732 people, of whom about 14,286 are Non-Resident Indians and about 10,446 are Persons of Indian Origin. India's Ministry of Shipping has an MoU with the Antwerp Port Authority, which trains Indian port officials, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi gifted by India stands in front of the Antwerp Courthouse.

Thirteen enclosed communities of medieval religious women: the Flemish Beguinages

Belgium's heritage towns are in the news this week as autumn storms close parks and squares, and one of the country's World Heritage properties is spread across those towns. UNESCO inscribed the Flemish Beguinages in 1998 under criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv). The property is a serial listing of 13 beguinages in the Flanders Region, covering 59.95 hectares in all. A beguinage was an enclosed community founded in the thirteenth century by Beguines, women who dedicated their lives to God without leaving the world, and each community met its own spiritual and material needs. A beguinage held houses, churches, ancillary buildings and green spaces, and was often enclosed by walls or ditches. UNESCO calls the property an exceptional testimony to the medieval tradition of independent religious women in north-western Europe.
