Argentina reaffirms the 1881 and 1984 treaties after Chile announces a protest over Strait of Magellan remarks

On 25 August 2026 Argentina's foreign ministry issued a statement on the Strait of Magellan after friction with Chile.
The trigger was a remark by the head of Argentina's Air Force General Staff, after which Chile announced a formal diplomatic protest.
Argentina's statement said both instruments are fully in force and are considered definitive: the 1881 Boundary Treaty, which recognises Chilean sovereignty over the strait, and the 1984 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
