Assam Cabinet approves the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026
24 September 2026
The Assam Cabinet on 24 September 2026 approved the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026.
The rules set a uniform procedure for mandatory registration of Muslim marriages across the state.
They are framed under Section 25 of the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 2024.
That Act replaced the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said marriages will now be registered by registrars of marriages instead of kazis; panchayat-level officers may be given powers if applications are many.
The 2024 Act bars any registration that contravenes the legal age of marriage: 18 years for females and 21 years for males.
In plain words
Kazi — A Muslim legal officer who earlier registered Muslim marriages in Assam.
