Australia to let Taiwan licence holders swap for an Australian licence without a test
22 October 2026
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Australian transport authority Austroads had included Taiwan in its Recognised Overseas Licenses Scheme.
Holders of valid Taiwan car or motorcycle licences may exchange them for an Australian licence without a written exam or a road test, subject to each state's rules.
The policy takes effect as early as October 31, starting in Western Australia and Queensland.
New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory follow on January 1, 2027, and Tasmania on February 1, 2027.
No timetable has been set for the Australian Capital Territory or Victoria.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung credited the ministry and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia, and said reciprocal treatment for Australians in Taiwan would be worked out with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
