Behind this week's Telangana approvals: a State of thirty three districts carved out of Andhra Pradesh
Background
The urban projects cleared for Telangana this week are spread over several of its districts, so the State's basic numbers are worth fixing in mind. Telangana is the newest of the southern States. Its own government profile dates its birth to the second day of June 2014, after Parliament passed the measure that reorganised Andhra Pradesh. The State therefore owes its existence to the splitting of Andhra Pradesh, and Hyderabad, which had been the shared capital, is its capital. The profile counts thirty three districts in the State. It puts the area at 1,12,077 sq km. The High Court the two States had shared at Hyderabad was later divided, leaving a High Court for the State of Telangana there and a separate High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
