Constitutional Court orders rejected ANC candidate lists onto the ballots for the 4 November local elections

The Electoral Commission of South Africa said on 15 October 2026 that it notes the Constitutional Court's judgement in the candidate lists matter.
The Court upheld the appeal of the African National Congress and set aside the Commission's decision to reject the party's lists for several municipalities.
It ordered that the affected lists be included in the ballot papers.
The ANC said a technical fault in the Commission's online submission system had prevented it from submitting 181 candidates by the deadline.
The ruling applies to the Local Government Elections of 4 November 2026.

Election date: 4 November 2026 Candidates involved: 181
Why it matters for exams: It is a clean example of a constitutional court correcting an election management body before polling, a comparison aspirants are asked to draw with India's Election Commission.
