DRI recovers 5,832.90 grams of smuggled gold from a hidden cavity in a car at Visakhapatnam
11 October 2026
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad at Visakhapatnam during 08–09 October 2026, the Ministry of Finance said on 11 October.
A specially fabricated cavity beneath the leg space of the front co-passenger seat held three packets with 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately Rs. 8.98 crore.
The occupants said the gold had been smuggled into India through the Indo-Bangladesh border and was being taken to Hyderabad.
The gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962, and both occupants were arrested.
The DRI compared the method with its September 2026 seizure near Palwal Toll Plaza, where more than 15 kg of gold was found in cavities of two Thar vehicles.
