European Commission and Council of Europe respond to Serbia's election outcome

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union stands ready to support reforms in Serbia, including the rule of law, media freedom and the fight against corruption. Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, said a new chapter can begin for Serbia. Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, welcomed the acceptance of the result and praised the student movement's commitment to European principles. The Council of Europe is a separate human rights organisation based in Strasbourg and is not an institution of the European Union. Serbia is a member of the Council of Europe and a candidate for European Union membership.

Council of Europe headquarters: Strasbourg
Why it matters for exams: Ursula von der Leyen heads the European Commission, Marta Kos holds the enlargement portfolio, and the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, is distinct from the European Union.
