Gabriela Mistral, born in Vicuña, Chile, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945 for her lyric poetry, which "has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world".
Pablo Neruda won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971 "for a poetry that with the action of an elemental force brings alive a continent's destiny and dreams".
