Gerard Larcher re-elected President of the French Senate after the series 2 renewal
1 October 2026
France renewed part of its upper house and then chose its presiding officer. Polling for the 178 seats of series 2 was held on 27 September 2026, and the mandates of the newly elected senators began on 1 October. On that same day the Senate elected its President by secret ballot, under the chairmanship of the oldest member present, Pierre Cuypers. Gerard Larcher was returned to the chair with 203 of the 302 votes cast. Patrick Kanner received 60 votes, Cecile Cukierman 22 and Melanie Vogel 17. The vice-presidents, questeurs and secretaries who make up the Bureau of the Senate were designated in public session on 6 October 2026. The French Senate is not dissolved as a whole; it is renewed in series, which is why only one block of seats went to the polls.
In plain words
