Germany's Federal Convention is called for 30 January 2027 to choose the next Federal President

Bundestag President Julia Kloeckner has summoned the 18th Bundesversammlung, the Federal Convention, for Saturday 30 January 2027 in the Bundestag to elect Germany's Federal President. The term of the incumbent, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, ends on 18 March 2027, and the Basic Law requires the Convention to meet at least 30 days before a term expires; the latest possible date would have been 16 February 2027. The Convention has 1,260 members: all 630 members of the Bundestag plus an equal number of delegates chosen by the 16 state parliaments in proportion to population. It votes by secret ballot with no debate. A candidate needs an absolute majority in either of the first two rounds; a third round is decided by simple plurality. Any German who has turned 40 may be elected.

Date of the 18th Federal Convention: 30 January 2027 Members of the Convention: 1,260 (630 + 630) Incumbent's term ends: 18 March 2027 Minimum age to be elected: 40 years
Why it matters for exams: The Bundesversammlung is the favourite comparison with India's presidential electoral college and is asked in polity papers.
