Japan's Reconstruction Promotion Council holds its 45th meeting with Fukushima the first priority

Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae chaired the 45th meeting of Japan's Reconstruction Promotion Council at the Prime Minister's Office on 2 October 2026.
She noted that 15 years and six months have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
She said the full-scale reconstruction and revitalization of Fukushima and the reconstruction of Tohoku are top government priorities, with progress varying by area.
The present fiscal year is the first year of the third reconstruction and revitalization period, and the government will act on the Basic Guidelines on Reconstruction approved by the Cabinet in June.
She asked all Cabinet members to promote the use of reconstruction and recycled soil, and said the path beyond 2030 towards final disposal outside Fukushima Prefecture would be made more concrete.
In her closing remarks she said there will be no reconstruction of Tohoku without the reconstruction of Fukushima.
