Kerala High Court tells State to give the Finance Department particulars on 229 new Consumer Commission posts within three weeks
10 October 2026
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M. passed the order in Adv. J. Surya v. State of Kerala, W.P.(PIL) No. 53 of 2026, in a matter reported on 10 October 2026.
A proposal to create 229 new posts in the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the District Consumer Commissions is pending with the State.
The Court directed the State to furnish all particulars sought by the Finance Department within three weeks and to treat the proposal as a priority.
The Finance Department had sought a work study, details of permanent and temporary posts in the Commissions, and the source of funds for the expenditure.
The Court recorded that many Consumer Commission orders remain unexecuted for want of manpower and infrastructure.
An administrative sanction of Rs. 1 crore was issued on 5 October 2026 for the scheme Modernisation and Strengthening of State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and District Commissions.
The Bench stated that it is the responsibility of the State Government to ensure that all required infrastructural facilities are provided in time to courts, tribunals and commissions.
The matter will be considered again on 2 December 2026.
