Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 provides seizure yards in every taluk

Transport Minister C.P. John introduced the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Assembly on Wednesday.
It provides for Approved Vehicle Seizure Yards in every taluk to keep vehicles seized for non-payment of tax.
Under the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1976, MVD officers of Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector rank and above and police of Sub-Inspector rank and above can seize such vehicles, but lack of suitable land had hampered enforcement.
Owners must pay transport and parking charges before release, even after showing proof of tax payment; rates will be fixed later.
The Bill was referred to the subject committee.
