Lord Briggs of Westbourne will be the next President of the UK Supreme Court
8 September 2026
Britain will have a new head of its highest court in January 2027. Lord Briggs of Westbourne is to take the office of President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, and the announcement came on 8 September 2026. He steps in when Lord Reed of Allermuir retires from the post. An independent selection commission put his name forward, the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor then advised the King, and the King made the appointment. Lord Briggs reached the Court of Appeal as a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2013 and joined the Supreme Court as a Justice in 2017. He also led the Civil Courts Structure Review, whose recommendations included setting up an online civil court, and served as Deputy Head of Civil Justice. He now looks after practice and procedure for the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as well.
