Makkekadavu-Nerekadavu bridge across the Vembanad backwaters opens, linking Alappuzha to Kottayam

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated the Makkekadavu-Nerekadavu bridge at 9 am on Sunday, 18 October 2026, with Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer presiding.
The bridge cost 98.09 crore and runs about 800 metres across the Vembanad backwaters, with pedestrian walkways on both sides.
It connects Makkekadavu in Thycattusserry panchayat in Alappuzha district on the western bank with Nerekadavu in Udayanapuram panchayat in Kottayam district on the eastern bank.
The structure was built with State funds; construction had crossed 90 per cent by May 2026, when the remaining approach road work was pending.
The crossing had earlier depended on water transport between the two banks.

Cost: 98.09 crore Length: about 800 metres Districts joined: Alappuzha and Kottayam Water body: Vembanad backwaters
Why it matters for exams: A named State-funded bridge with its cost, length and the two districts it joins is exactly the kind of Kerala infrastructure fact an examiner sets.
