Manipur attained statehood under the North-East Area (Re-organisation) Act
Background
Manipur attained statehood on January 21, 1972 under the North-East Area (Re-organisation) Act 1971.
Before that, the Territorial Council was abolished and Manipur was placed under a Chief Commissioner from May 11, 1963 onwards.
In that period it had a Territorial Legislative Assembly and a Council of Ministers to assist the Chief Commissioner.
Manipur had merged into the Indian Union on October 15, 1949, after which it became a centrally administered area.
It remained centrally administered till October 31, 1956.
During the British regime the Maharaja appointed the functionaries of the state under the Rules of Management of the State of Manipur, enforced on September 14, 1935.
