Mexican judge jails three men for 158 years each over the killing of two Australian brothers and their American friend

A judge in Mexico has sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the murders of the Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad. The three were shot dead on 27 April 2024 while camping in a remote beachside area near the city of Ensenada in the state of Baja California during a surfing trip, and their bodies were found days later in a clifftop well with gunshot wounds to the heads. The men were convicted of homicide, aggravated robbery, robbery with violence and vehicle theft with violence. They were identified only as Jesus Gerardo, Irineo Francisco and Angel Jesus because their surnames were not disclosed for legal reasons. The trial began on 7 September. Prosecutors had sought damages of more than 100,000 dollars, but the judge ruled that compensation would have to be pursued through civil proceedings.
