Mizoram's railway lifeline runs 51.38 km from Bairabi to Sairang, at the threshold of Aizawl
Background
Mizoram's rail link to the national network is the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang line, which was inaugurated along with the Sairang railway station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025. It is anchored today in the attention the Northeast is getting for border trade and connectivity projects in Mizoram. The corridor carries the national railway network onwards from Bairabi and completes rail connectivity to the very threshold of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Before it, the state's difficult terrain made long-distance movement heavily dependent on roads. The project falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone.
In plain words
NFR Northeast Frontier Railway — The Indian Railways zone that runs the network across the northeastern states.
Sairang Sairang — The railway station nearest to Aizawl, on the western edge of the capital.
