Nepal drafts a national roadmap under the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection
3 November 2026
Nepal's National Planning Commission sat down with its Ministry of Youth, Labour and Employment at Nagarkot on 30 and 31 October. Over two days they drafted the country's road map under the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, and worked on two draft policies: a National Employment Policy and a National Care Economy Promotion Policy. The International Labour Organization and UN Women gave technical support. Nepal is a Pathfinder Country under the Global Accelerator, an initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General in which the Resident Coordinator's Office, the ILO, UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women and the World Bank take part. Participants named agriculture, tourism, construction, the care economy and digitalisation as the sectors to work on. Nepal's population aged 60 and above is projected to pass 7.1 million by 2051, which with continuing migration will push up the demand for care services. The proposals cover better coordination of vocational training across all three tiers of government, work on the National Qualifications Framework, and extending contributory social security to micro and small enterprises and to temporary and part-time workers. Both policies are to be finalised within 100 working days.
