Pacific media bodies mark the day against impunity for crimes against journalists

UNESCO, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Fiji Media Association held a dialogue at Suva to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
The day is observed every year on 2 November, and the UN General Assembly proclaimed it in 2013.
The theme set for 2026 is Threats evolve. Impunity endures.
Speakers dealt with the risks Pacific journalists face, including online harassment and threats aimed at women reporters.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime linked the work of the press to transparency and to the Teieniwa Vision, the Pacific declaration against corruption.
The head of the Fiji Media Association asked for practical steps rather than general discussion, and editors spoke of mentoring between experienced and younger journalists.
Participants called for legal, digital and psychological protection for reporters and for policies that protect freedom of expression and access to information.
