Piprahwa relics of the Buddha go on display at Tawang Monastery in a three-stop Arunachal exposition
1 November 2026
The Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha have been placed for public veneration at Tawang Monastery, whose formal name is Gaden Namgyal Lhatse.
The relics come from Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh, a site linked to ancient Kapilavastu and the Shakya tradition, and are kept at the National Museum in New Delhi.
The exposition is organised by the Ministry of Culture with the Arunachal Pradesh government, the International Buddhist Confederation and the National Museum.
It runs from 31 October to 21 November across Tawang, Bomdila and Namsai.
Tawang Monastery hosts the relics from 1 to 7 November, TGL Monastery at Bomdila from 8 to 13 November and the Golden Pagoda at Namsai from 14 to 20 November.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu received the relics and Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was present.
An accompanying exhibition traces the Piprahwa excavations and the return of the relics to India.
