Security Council resolution 2830 rolls the Darfur arms embargo over to 11 December as a Sudan-wide embargo is set aside

The 15-member United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2830, extending the Darfur arms embargo together with the related travel ban and asset freeze by two months, until 11 December. The mandate of the Panel of Experts, which monitors the measures, was extended until 11 January 2027. A United States proposal to widen the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan was opposed by Russia and China, both permanent members, and the Council did not agree to it. The Darfur arms embargo dates from resolution 1556 of 30 July 2004 and was widened by resolution 1591 of 2005, which also created the sanctions committee.

Resolution: 2830 Embargo extended until: 11 December Panel of Experts mandate until: 11 January 2027 Vote: Unanimous, 15-member Council
Why it matters for exams: Resolution numbers with dates, and the use of the veto-bearing permanent members to block a wider embargo, are standard Security Council questions.
