Senapred raises a red alert for ten Metropolitan Region communes over mass-movement risk

Chile's Servicio Nacional de Prevencion y Respuesta ante Desastres (Senapred) cancelled its yellow alert and declared a red alert for ten communes of the Region Metropolitana - San Jose de Maipo, Puente Alto, Pirque, La Florida, Penalolen, La Reina, Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Vitacura and Colina - because of the risk of remocion en masa, the mass movement of earth and rock. Sernageomin rated the likelihood of aluviones and derrumbes as high in the precordillera, moderate in the coastal range and the central valley, and low in the Andean cordillera of the region. The forecast was for 15 to 25 mm of rain over Santiago in short, intense bursts, with electrical activity and possible hail.

Alert level: Red alert Communes under alert: 10 Region: Region Metropolitana Rainfall expected over Santiago: 15 to 25 mm Hazard rated by: Sernageomin
Why it matters for exams: Senapred and Sernageomin are the two Chilean agencies named in any disaster item, and Santiago lies in the Region Metropolitana at the foot of the Andes.
