30 October 2026
Bank credit is expanding far faster than it was a year ago, going by the Reserve Bank of India's September 2026 release on where bank credit goes. Take the fortnight that closed on 30 September 2026. Non-food bank credit stood 19.1 per cent above its level a year before, where the comparable figure twelve months earlier had been only 11.2 per cent. Services borrowed most heavily of all, growing 28.3 per cent against 9.9 per cent. Farm and allied lending rose 19.5 per cent, where a year earlier the rise had been 8.9 per cent. Industry matched that 19.5 per cent, against 7.7 per cent. Personal loans grew 17.3 per cent, after 11.5 per cent. The sector-wise numbers are drawn from 41 banks the central bank selects, and roughly 95 per cent of all non-food credit of scheduled commercial banks sits with them.
In plain words
Non-food credit Bank credit other than loans for food procurement — All bank lending except advances to agencies that buy food grain for the government.
