Sudan's highest point is the Deriba Caldera on Jebel Marra, at 3,042 metres
Background
Darfur is where the heaviest fighting of Sudan's war is reported, and its physical centre is a volcanic massif. NASA describes Jebel Marra, also called the Marrah Mountains, as an almost circular massif in the Darfur region of western Sudan, in the eastern Sahara Desert. It is a large cluster of volcanoes and lava flows, with a central area of volcanic pyroclastic deposits spanning roughly 70 kilometres, or 40 miles, north to south, and numerous small volcanic cones around its edges. The Deriba Caldera, a collapsed volcano within the massif, is the highest point in Sudan at 3,042 metres, or 9,980 feet, and it holds two small lakes.
In plain words
