Supreme Court asks NCPCR Chairperson to appear over implementation of 25 per cent RTE quota

On 29 September 2026 a Supreme Court bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe took up implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act.
The provision requires private unaided schools to admit 25 per cent of their students from economically weaker and disadvantaged groups.
The Court asked the NCPCR Chairperson and Director to appear at the next hearing.
The bench asked, "How can they act so indifferent? Who heads the NCPCR?"
The Court said the NCPCR must move beyond collecting data and ensure that Section 12 is put into practice.
The case is Dinesh Biwaji Ashtikar v. State of Maharashtra.
