Supreme Court says it will step in if protest-linked restrictions in New Delhi hurt businesses
17 October 2026
A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi has said the Supreme Court will step in if frequent protests and security restrictions around Connaught Place adversely affect businesses.
The observation came on a plea challenging the New Delhi Municipal Council's decision to close Central Park for two days ahead of a protest.
Counsel appearing for traders argued that the protests were causing major business losses and that the restrictions were disproportionate, especially ahead of the festival season covering Karva Chauth, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath.
The Chief Justice acknowledged the hardship faced by small shopkeepers, hawkers and stall owners whose livelihoods and families are affected.
The bench said it would use its constitutional and public law powers if the restrictions unlawfully harmed businesses.
The report records no formal order or interim relief at this stage.
