The Kuwaiti dinar is pegged to an undisclosed weighted basket of international currencies
Background
The Central Bank of Kuwait states that its exchange rate policy aims at maintaining the relative stability of the Kuwaiti dinar against other currencies and shielding the domestic economy from imported inflation, in an economy that imposes no restrictions on the movement of capital.
From 18 March 1975 to the end of 2002 the dinar was pegged to a weighted basket of the currencies of countries with significant trade and financial relations with Kuwait.
By Decree No. 266/2002 the dinar was pegged to the United States dollar from 5 January 2003, at a parity rate of 299.63 fils per dollar with margins of plus or minus 3.5 per cent.
By Decree No. 147/2007 the dinar was repegged, effective 20 May 2007, to an undisclosed weighted basket of international currencies of Kuwait's major trade and financial partner countries.
The Central Bank says the return to a basket aims at protecting the purchasing power of the national currency and containing inflationary pressures.
Its published series puts the average exchange rate of the dinar in 2025 at 306.4 fils per United States dollar.
