The United Kingdom's four nations, its capital city and the pound sterling
Background
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of mainland Great Britain — England, Wales and Scotland — and the northern part of the island of Ireland, which is Northern Ireland.
Its capital city is London, which also hosts the headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The Commonwealth country profile puts the population at 67.2 million (2022) and the area at 242,500 square kilometres.
The pound sterling is the official currency in the United Kingdom. The Bank of England issues the UK's banknotes, while coins are manufactured and issued by the Royal Mint.
Scottish and Northern Ireland banknotes also circulate: they are issued by three banks in Scotland and three banks in Northern Ireland, and the Bank of England regulates that issuance.
The United Kingdom joined the Commonwealth in 1926, on the founding of the British Commonwealth of Nations; 56 independent countries make up the Commonwealth today.
The United Kingdom is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, with China, France, the Russian Federation and the United States. The Council has 15 members in all, the other ten elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
