Background
Of the properties inscribed on the World Heritage List for India, three lie in Madhya Pradesh.
They are the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, inscribed in 1986; the Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, inscribed in 1989; and the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, inscribed in 2003.
All three are listed under the cultural category, not the natural one.
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu temples and Jain temples in Chhatarpur district, about 175 kilometres southeast of Jhansi.
Among the important tourist spots of Chhatarpur district are the Chaunsat Yogini, the Kandariya Mahadeo, the Chitragupta Temple, the Lakshmana temple and the Duladeo Temple.
The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka lie in the southern part of Raisen district, near the Satpura range.
