UN Special Rapporteur's report counts 8,384 civilians killed in Myanmar since the 2021 coup

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Kelley Anne Eckels-Currie, presented a new report and called the country's human rights situation catastrophic. The report counts at least 8,384 civilians killed by the military since the coup of February 2021, up to 15 September 2026. Myanmar has been in civil war since the military removed the elected government in February 2021. The report says the military declared a hundred-day peace plan between 20 April and 31 July 2026, yet about 753 civilians were killed in that period, with the military and paramilitary forces responsible for 89 per cent of those deaths. It describes a Four Cuts doctrine, meaning the cutting off of food, resources, humanitarian access and support networks from any area that resists. A growing illicit economy is named as a driver of the conflict rather than only its result. A Special Rapporteur is named by the UN Human Rights Council. The post is unpaid and the holder works as an independent expert in a personal capacity, not as a UN staff member.
