United Nations Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage approves US$20 million for flood-hit Nepal

The Board of the United Nations Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage approved US$20 million for Nepal at an extraordinary meeting on 22 October 2026, after an urgent request from the country.
The money is to support Nepal's recovery from floods caused by an ice-and-rock avalanche in the Himalayas on 26 August 2026.
The avalanche triggered floods along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, destroying homes, roads, hydropower projects and other critical infrastructure.
A government assessment puts damage and economic losses at US$2.7 billion, and recovery and reconstruction needs at about US$4.7 billion.
The money has not been disbursed; Nepal must first submit a detailed project proposal for the Fund to approve.

Amount approved: US$20 million Damage and economic losses: US$2.7 billion Recovery and reconstruction needs: About US$4.7 billion Rivers affected: Bhotekoshi and Trishuli
Why it matters for exams: The Loss and Damage Fund is a core climate-negotiation institution and its first country disbursements are examinable facts.
