Wildlife Institute of India: the nodal national agency for wildlife research and training
Background
The science behind India's tiger and elephant assessments comes largely from the Wildlife Institute of India at Dehradun in Uttarakhand, which its own website describes as a premier national institute for wildlife research and biodiversity conservation. The Institute was established in 1982 and offers training programmes, academic courses and advisory services in wildlife research and management. It is the nodal national agency for research and training in the field of wildlife conservation, and is actively engaged in research across the breadth of the country on biodiversity-related issues. Its mandate includes generating quality knowledge in wildlife science and complementing national efforts in wildlife conservation. The Institute is a four-star top-rated accredited institute as per the Capacity Building Commission among all national civil service training institutes.
