Myanmar's president lands in Kuala Lumpur for two days of talks on returning Myanmar nationals

Myanmar's president Min Aung Hlaing landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Wednesday for a two-day visit, his first to Malaysia since the military took power in 2021.
Malaysia's government said the visit allows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to maintain direct engagement with Myanmar, and named the voluntary, dignified and safe repatriation of Myanmar nationals staying illegally in Malaysia as the key bilateral issue.
Anwar has said about 10,000 Myanmar nationals have been sent back since January.
Malaysia hosts about 215,600 refugees and asylum seekers registered with the United Nations refugee agency, including about 126,000 Rohingya.
Since taking office as president in April, Min Aung Hlaing has travelled to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, China, India, Russia and Belarus.
Malaysia is not a party to the United Nations Refugee Convention and treats refugees as undocumented migrants.

Sent back since January: about 10,000 Refugees registered in Malaysia: about 215,600 Rohingya among them: about 126,000
Why it matters for exams: Myanmar's return to bilateral summit diplomacy inside ASEAN and the Rohingya question are standing themes in international relations papers.

Malaysia tells its Parliament about 10,000 Myanmar nationals have been sent home since January

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament on Tuesday that about 10,000 people had been sent back to Myanmar since January, some on flights arranged by Myanmar's government and nearly 1,500 by sea in the previous week.
He said Myanmar authorities had given assurances that returnees would not be harmed, and that Myanmar must treat its people fairly, with no abuses, coercion or rights violations.
The United Nations refugee agency said its staff were not allowed to meet the Myanmar nationals, so it could not confirm that their decisions to return were genuinely free and informed.
Human Rights Watch, in a statement issued the same day, asked Malaysia to grant the agency full and unimpeded access to all immigration detention centres.
More than 50,000 refugees were detained in Malaysia during 2026 as immigration raids widened.
Anwar said he would continue to discuss the matter with Myanmar's president, who was due in Kuala Lumpur within days.

Sent back since January: about 10,000 Returned by sea in the previous week: nearly 1,500 Refugees detained in Malaysia in 2026: more than 50,000
Why it matters for exams: The figures and the access question are the kind of detail an examiner uses to test a candidate on refugee protection and the principle of non-refoulement.

Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals deported from Malaysia reach Yangon on navy ships

Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals deported from Malaysia, among them 86 women, reached southern Yangon early on Sunday aboard two navy warships and a hospital ship.
A regional government minister, Nay Lin Tun, confirmed the arrival, and a foreign ministry official, Han Win Aung, said the returnees were genuine citizens.
The group is the first instalment of 5,000 people Malaysia has arranged to return in stages.
Malaysia's Home Ministry said 10,388 more Myanmar nationals were being held in immigration detention centres.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Kelley E. Currie, said that in her assessment the risk of refoulement in the present circumstances is substantial.

UN expert says conditions for a safe and voluntary return to Myanmar are not in place

Kelley E. Currie, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, said in Geneva that she was gravely concerned by Malaysia's move to return 5,000 Myanmar nationals, including women and children, under a programme agreed with Myanmar's military authorities.
She said the conditions necessary for a safe, dignified, sustainable and genuinely voluntary return are not currently in place, and that the risk of refoulement is substantial.
She described the military's restrictions on humanitarian access and independent monitoring as severe, including at camps for displaced people in Rakhine State under military control.
The first group of 1,476 people was returned from Malaysia beginning on 29 September.
The statement also recorded that on 28 September the Myanmar military struck the India Market in Pike Thae village, Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, killing more than 50 civilians, with many more injured.

Myanmar is India's only land neighbour inside ASEAN, with a 1,643-km land border

The Embassy of India in Yangon describes India and Myanmar as immediate neighbours linked by a 1,643-km land border and a maritime boundary of 1098 kms in the Bay of Bengal. The embassy calls Myanmar the only ASEAN country sharing both a land and maritime boundary with India, and a gateway connecting India's Northeast with Southeast Asia. The embassy records cooperation spanning trade, connectivity, border management and, among other fields, development partnership, capacity building, energy, health, education and cultural exchanges. The embassy says the relationship is guided by India's Neighborhood First, Act East, Indo-Pacific and MAHASAGAR visions, and that the two countries share deep-rooted historical, civilizational, cultural and people-to-people ties.

The Kaladan corridor and the Trilateral Highway are India's two main connectivity projects in Myanmar

The Embassy of India in Yangon describes the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Corridor (KMTTC) Project as one of the most significant projects undertaken by India in Myanmar. Its objective is to create a multi-modal transport corridor for shipment of cargo from the eastern ports of India to Myanmar as well as North-Eastern part of India via Myanmar. The project includes a waterway component of 158 km on Kaladan River from Sittwe to Paletwa and a road component of 109 km from Paletwa to Zorinpui on the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram State. Under a bilateral memorandum of understanding for the management of port operations, the Sittwe Port is being operated by India Ports Global Limited (IPGL). The India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway is the other major connectivity project India is involved in, on two segments; the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been identified as the implementing agency for both the components of the project, which include the 112-km long Kalewa-Yargyi sector.

Myanmar entered the United Nations and the GATT in the same year, and the WTO on the day it opened

The United Nations list of Member States gives the entry Myanmar Date of Admission: 19-04-1948. On trade, the World Trade Organization's member information page states that Myanmar has been a WTO member since 1 January 1995 and a member of GATT since 29 July 1948. Because 1 January 1995 is the day the WTO itself came into being, Myanmar is an original member of the organisation rather than a later accession, having carried its membership across from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

UN date of admission: 19-04-1948 WTO member since: 1 January 1995 GATT member since: 29 July 1948

Myanmar has two World Heritage properties, both cultural: the Pyu Ancient Cities and Bagan

UNESCO's World Heritage states parties page for Myanmar gives the count under the heading Properties inscribed on the World Heritage List 2, and places both in the Cultural category: Pyu Ancient Cities (2014) and Bagan (2019). The Pyu Ancient Cities was the earlier inscription, recorded by UNESCO as the country's first site inscribed to World Heritage List. The same page gives the Acceptance of the Convention: Friday, 29 April 1994, and lists Sites on the Tentative List 15. UNESCO explains that a Tentative List is an inventory of those properties which each State Party intends to consider for nomination, so the fifteen are candidates rather than inscriptions.

Myanmar's main monsoon paddy crop supplies about 80 percent of its annual rice production

The Food and Agriculture Organization's Global Information and Early Warning System country brief on Myanmar sets out a two-crop paddy calendar. Harvesting of the main paddy crop, which accounts for about 80 percent of annual production, is expected to begin at the end of October. The secondary paddy crop, which accounts for about 20 percent of total annual production, will be planted from October onwards. The main crop is grown on the rains: the brief tracks the June to October monsoon season, whose timing and volume decide the size of the larger harvest. The brief reports crop conditions by administrative unit, naming Rakhine State, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady Region - an illustration of Myanmar's two-name administrative structure, in which the first-order units are called States and Regions.

Why it matters for exams: Rice is the fact examiners reach for on Myanmar's economy, and the two-crop split with the monsoon crop dominant explains why a weak monsoon there moves regional rice prices.

Myanmar acceded to ASEAN on the same day as Lao PDR, after Viet Nam and before Cambodia

The official ASEAN account of the Association's own membership records that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration, also called the Bangkok Declaration, by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984, followed by Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999. Timor-Leste acceded on 26 October 2025 as the eleventh member of ASEAN. Myanmar therefore joined at the same time as Lao PDR and ahead of Cambodia.
