Background
Palakkad, the district where the Sreekrishnapuram case now before the Kerala High Court arose, is one of the fourteen districts of Kerala and has no coastal line. The district opens the State to the rest of the country through the Palakkad Gap, a break in the Western Ghats with a width of 32 to 40 kilometres. Palakkad is one of the main granaries of Kerala and its economy is primarily agricultural. Its geographical position, historical background, educational status and tourism sites give the district a distinct character within the State.
