A paper published in Nature on 14 October 2026, with Sheng Ding of Tsinghua University as corresponding author, reports continuous development outside the womb of mouse embryo models grown only from chemically induced totipotent-like stem cells. The cells self-organised into blastocyst-like structures that resembled natural blastocysts in shape and in the separation of cell lineages. The resulting models then went through gastrulation, embryonic axis formation, blood formation and early organ formation, closely resembling natural embryos at embryonic day 8.5. With longer culture the models developed functional cardiac tissue that the authors describe as highly comparable to natural embryos at day 10.5. The authors conclude that a single induced cell type can recapitulate much of early mouse embryogenesis and offer the system as a model for studying mammalian development.

A paper published in Nature on 14 October 2026 reports that the surface of a microplastic particle in water is chemically active. Polystyrene microplastics degraded about 90 per cent of the dye methyl orange over ten days in water but not in other solvents, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy confirmed hydroxyl radical production at the particle-water interface. Six commodity plastics, namely polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polymethyl methacrylate, all generated radicals, with more hydrophobic surfaces more active. Adding the surfactant Triton X-100 reduced radical generation, surface charge and the accumulation of a hydrophobic dye on the particle surface. Charged biomolecules such as proteins and DNA accumulated on the particle surfaces, the radicals promoted protein aggregation, and the particles damaged mouse red blood cells. The authors conclude that plastics in microplastic form are not chemically inert and that this reactivity may contribute to health and environmental harm.

Background
Kerala is now giving its people's health centres their own buildings and a fixed list of free medicines, and the framework behind those centres is the Aardram Mission.
Aardram is one of the four missions under the Nava Kerala Mission of the Government of Kerala.
It was launched in February 2017 with the objective of completely transforming the public health sector, against the backdrop of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
Its primary focus is Sustainable Development Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being, with short-term goals set for 2020 and long-term goals for 2030.
Its main objectives are people-friendly outpatient services, re-engineering primary health centres into family health centres, access to comprehensive health services for marginalised and vulnerable groups, and standardisation of services from primary to tertiary settings.
The transformation covers preventive, promotive, curative, palliative and rehabilitative services, with record management through the e-Health system.
The Panchayat Raj Act of 1994, which transferred institutions such as primary health centres to local self-governing bodies, made the transformation easier by allowing convergence with other departments and with national, State and panchayat programmes.
Community participation is built in through forums such as the Arogyasena.

The World Health Organization has confirmed that Egypt remains the first country to hold gold tier status on the path to elimination of hepatitis C, after an assessment of its progress between 2023 and 2025. WHO first granted Egypt that status, stating that Egypt had become the first country to achieve gold tier status on the path to elimination of hepatitis C as per WHO criteria. Achieving the gold tier means a country has fulfilled the programmatic requirements that reduce new hepatitis C infections and deaths to levels that position it to end the epidemic. Egypt reduced the prevalence of hepatitis C from 10 percent to 0.38 percent in just over a decade. Its 100 million seha, or 100 million healthy lives, campaign resulted in the testing of over 60 million people and treatment of more than 4.1 million people, with a 99 percent cure rate among those treated. Locally manufactured direct-acting antiviral treatments were a key factor. Egypt established the National Committee for Control of Viral Hepatitis in 2006 to lead the national response.
