Kerala High Court seeks practical road safety inputs from Transport Commissioner and other authorities

The Kerala High Court on Thursday, 15 October 2026, called for urgent practical solutions from State authorities to ensure road safety and to implement its earlier directions. The Division Bench of Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V. and Justice K.V. Jayakumar observed that time is of essence and that the Court's directions will have to be implemented without delay. The Bench was hearing a suo motu writ petition monitoring road safety in the State along with a connected plea. Its earlier directions included a State-wide, GIS-enabled Integrated Road Safety Monitoring Platform to link the existing systems of the Public Works Department, the Motor Vehicles department, the Kerala Police and other State agencies, and measures on over-speeding and rash driving by private buses. The Court said any respondent officer may appear in person or virtually so that inputs can be obtained, and referred to problems of lane indiscipline, inadequate signage and weak follow-up on AI camera detections. The case is posted to 3 November 2026 at 1:45 p.m.

Nature study finds early tetrapods could barely turn their heads, using sturgeon as a living analogue

A study in Nature has modelled how much the earliest four-limbed land animals could move their necks.
Because the fossil animals had an axial column dominated by soft tissue rather than fused bone, the team ran material tests on the axial columns of sturgeon, a living fish with a similarly configured notochord-dominated column.
The model found the soft-tissue-dominated column was surprisingly rigid even though it lacks co-ossified vertebral components.
Most stem tetrapods could move their heads less than 6 degrees laterally and less than 3 degrees dorsally, and could not rotate them at all.
Neck mobility did not change as the gap between head and shoulder widened from Eusthenopteron to more crownward stem tetrapods, so the authors argue that forelimb-driven locomotion, not a need to turn the head, explains that separation.

Lateral head movement: Less than 6 degrees Dorsal head movement: Less than 3 degrees Living analogue used: Sturgeon Journal: Nature, 14 October 2026

Nature reports de novo designed cysteine proteases, built on folds unlike any natural enzyme

A paper in Nature reports the de novo design of cysteine proteases, enzymes that cut other proteins.
The designs were not copied from nature: the reported folds are very different from natural proteases, with a TM score below 0.50.
Of the designs tested, 13 out of 69, or 19 per cent, worked.
Six crystal structures matched the design models closely, with a C-alpha root mean squared deviation of less than 1.2 angstrom.
The work comes from the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington, with David Baker, Samuel J. Pellock and Donald Hilvert of ETH Zurich as corresponding authors.

Success rate: 13/69 = 19% Fold similarity to natural proteases: TM score < 0.50 Crystal structures solved: Six, with deviation <1.2 angstrom
Why it matters for exams: Designed enzymes show how computational protein design has moved from prediction to building new catalysts.

Nature paper reports a one-year blind test of satellite methane detection over 746 events

A paper in Nature reports a year-long single-blind test of how well satellites detect and measure methane leaks.
The test covered 746 events: 481 controlled methane releases ranging from 9.5 to 1,183.7 kg/h and 265 blank controls.
The releases were made in Arizona and timed with overpasses from 12 government, commercial and non-profit satellites, and 15 analysis teams from nine countries produced over 2,250 estimates.
Instruments built for the purpose achieved a 92 to 100 per cent true positive rate with a 0 to 11 per cent false positive rate, while repurposed instruments detected 62 to 88 per cent of releases.
The authors note that 79 per cent of false positives came from methods based on artificial intelligence, and that ground-measured cloud cover above 20 per cent degraded performance across systems.

Events tested: 746 Controlled releases: 481, from 9.5 to 1,183.7 kg/h Satellites involved: 12 Analysis teams: 15, from nine countries
Why it matters for exams: Methane monitoring from space connects climate policy with remote sensing, a favourite cross-over area.
