The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana held its 132nd meeting from 23 to 24 September 2026. The Committee voted unanimously to keep the Monetary Policy Rate unchanged at 14.0 percent. The Monetary Policy Rate is the central bank's benchmark lending rate to commercial banks. The Bank of Ghana is the monetary authority of Ghana and the final word on its own policy rate. The decision leaves the rate at the same level the Committee set earlier in the year.

The World Bank's country overview for Ghana records resilient growth averaging 5.9 per cent in the last two years. Growth continued into the first half of 2026 at 6.2 per cent. The World Bank attributes it to strong services activity and a recovery of oil and gas, while agriculture slowed. Growth is projected at 4.8 per cent in 2026 and to converge towards medium-term potential. New PECAN oil fields coming onstream are among the factors named as supporting the outlook.

The World Bank's Ghana overview records that Ghana successfully completed the IMF ECF Program in July 2026. A non-financing Policy Coordination Instrument is expected to sustain reform momentum afterwards. Public debt fell to 49 per cent by end-2025. Fiscal discipline delivered a 2.1 per cent primary surplus in 2025 and a 0.9 per cent surplus in the first half of 2026. The overview notes that the first-half surplus relied on compression of capital expenditure.

Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, the great inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. Its land neighbours are Cote d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north and Togo to the east. The country is mainly flat, with hills in its northern part. It has a central area of forest and sandy beaches along the coast. Its population is about 34.4 million. This frame sits behind every Ghanaian economic story, because the coast carries the ports and the interior carries the cocoa and the gold.

The World Trade Organization records that Ghana has been a WTO member since 1 January 1995. That is the day the organisation itself came into being, so Ghana is a founder member. Ghana had been a member of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade since 17 October 1957. That GATT accession came in the year of Ghanaian independence. Ghana's trade policy, including its cocoa and gold exports, is conducted inside this framework. Membership of the trading system is the backdrop to the regional free trade arrangements Ghana also belongs to.

Why it matters for exams: Founder membership of the WTO and the earlier GATT date are exactly the pairing an examiner uses to separate the two bodies.

The Economic Community of West African States states that since 1975 it has worked for the integration, peace and shared prosperity of West Africa. Its headquarters is on Airport Road in Abuja, Nigeria. Ghana is one of its member states and has its own country page on the organisation's site. The community rests on a founding Treaty, later revised. Its remit runs from trade and free movement to peace and security operations in the region. Membership of ECOWAS is one of the two regional layers in which Ghanaian trade policy sits, alongside the continental free trade arrangement.

The African Union lists the African Continental Free Trade Area, known as AfCFTA, among its own bodies, with an AfCFTA Secretariat. That Secretariat is hosted in Accra, the capital of Ghana. The arrangement is the African Union's continent-wide free trade project. Hosting it places Ghana at the administrative centre of African trade integration. This sits alongside Ghana's membership of the West African regional community and of the World Trade Organization. For an aspirant, the city that hosts a body is asked as often as the year it was created.

The World Bank records that Ghana has achieved significant economic and social progress over three decades. It attained middle-income status in 2011. Yet more than 20 per cent of the population continue to experience poverty. Poverty rates exceed 50 per cent in the Northern and Savannah regions. The World Bank also notes that Ghana has taken major strides towards democracy under a multi-party system, with an independent judiciary that wins public trust. The gap between the national average and these two regions is the reason the country's safety net programmes are targeted rather than universal.
Middle-income status attained:
2011
Population in poverty:
more than 20%
Regions above 50%:

Why it matters for exams: The year a country crossed into middle income, with the region where poverty is worst, is a typical two-part development question.

Background
The World Bank records that Ghana emerged from a severe macroeconomic crisis marked by loss of market access, unsustainable debt levels and inflation peaking at 54 per cent in 2022. The crisis necessitated a comprehensive debt restructuring and a coordinated financing package from International Financial Institutions. Strong gold exports supported a current account surplus in recent years. Those exports helped rebuild reserve buffers to cover five months of imports. The World Bank calls the recovery significant. It frames the remaining challenge as converting macroeconomic gains into structural transformation and broad-based job creation.
Inflation peak:
54 per cent in 2022
Reserve cover:
5 months of imports
Export that supported the surplus:

Why it matters for exams: A debt restructuring plus a commodity export recovery is the classic template for a sovereign crisis question.
