Floods cover 22 Thai provinces and three Bangkok districts, affecting 1,830,946 people

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on 19 October 2026 that flooding continued in 22 provinces and three districts of Bangkok. Director-General Nirat Pongsitthaworn said 604,265 households and 1,830,946 people were affected across 88 districts, 715 subdistricts and 5,435 villages. The three Bangkok districts are Lat Krabang, Nong Chok and Min Buri, covering 16 subdistricts and 210,648 households. The department said water levels were falling in every affected area. Prolonged heavy rain and floodwater moving south from the North into the Central region caused rivers to overflow. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the Khlong Saen Saep-Nong Chok sluice gate and pumping station, run by the Royal Irrigation Department, on the evening of 18 October 2026. Water on the Nong Chok side fell about 10 cm after the gate was opened, while levels on the Khlong Saen Saep and Min Buri sides rose about 2 cm. Flood compensation registrations in Bangkok crossed one million.

Thailand's 165-billion-baht Chai Nat-Pa Sak-Gulf flood diversion canal is to begin construction in fiscal 2027

The Thai Cabinet has approved the Chai Nat-Pa Sak-Gulf of Thailand flood diversion canal, a decision Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced at Government House on 29 September 2026. The project is costed at THB165 billion, part of it to be financed through government borrowing, and is planned over eight years. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives proposed it, with the Finance Ministry, the Budget Bureau and the National Economic and Social Development Council involved in the funding arrangements. On 19 October 2026 the government said construction would begin in fiscal year 2027. The canal will divert Chao Phraya River water through Chai Nat and the Pa Sak River into the Gulf of Thailand and will also act as a retention basin storing water for the dry season. It is meant to cut flows towards Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Bangkok in peak flood season. Anutin said the state spends 40 to 50 billion baht a year on short-term flood relief.

Seventy-six provinces, a bicameral parliament and Theravada Buddhism: the frame of the Thai state

A Royal Thai Government page on the country states that Thailand is governed by a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament. The country comprises 76 provinces, which are further divided into districts, sub-districts and villages. The national religion is Theravada Buddhism, practised by more than 90 per cent of all Thais. The Thai language is the official language of Thailand, and the basic unit of currency is the Thai baht. Bangkok is the capital city and the centre of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities. The page divides the country into four natural regions: the mountains and forests of the North, the vast rice fields of the Central Plains, the semi-arid farm lands of the Northeast plateau, and the tropical islands and long coastline of the peninsular South. There is a Muslim-majority area in the south near the Malaysian border.

The United Nations records Thailand's date of admission as 15-12-1946

The roll of Member States maintained by the United Nations records Thailand's date of admission as 15-12-1946. The same roll carries a date of admission against every Member State's name. ASEAN's own country record for the Kingdom of Thailand gives 8 August 1967 as the commencement date of its membership, the day the Association was established in Bangkok. Thailand was one of the five states that founded ASEAN on that day. Its admission to the United Nations therefore came about two decades before ASEAN existed. Both entries are maintained by the organisations themselves rather than by Thailand.
