Argentina ratified the Antarctic Treaty, is a Consultative Party and runs 13 bases in its Antarctic Sector
Background
The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington on 1 December 1959, and Argentina ratified it by Law No. 15.802.
Argentina has been a Consultative Party to the Treaty since it entered into force in 1961.
Since the Treaty, all areas south of the 60th parallel south, up to the Pole at 90 degrees, are reserved for scientific and technical activities.
Article IV of the Treaty safeguards claims of sovereignty over Antarctica and their foundations.
In the Argentine Antarctic Sector the country administers 13 bases or stations: 6 are permanent, operating all year, and the rest are temporary, operating only in summer.
