Article 343 and Article 348: Hindi in Devnagari script for the Union, English for the courts and the statute book

Part XVII of the Constitution of India deals with official language.
Article 343 provides that the official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devnagari script, and that the form of numerals to be used for the official purposes of the Union shall be the international form of Indian numerals.
Article 345 allows the legislature of a State to adopt by law any one or more of the languages in use in the State, or Hindi, as the language for its official purposes.
Article 348 provides that until Parliament by law otherwise provides, all proceedings in the Supreme Court and in every High Court, and the authoritative texts of all Bills, Acts, Ordinances, orders, rules, regulations and bye-laws, shall be in the English language.
A Governor may, with the previous consent of the President, authorise the use of Hindi or of any other language used for official purposes of the State in proceedings in the High Court having its principal seat in that State, but this does not apply to any judgment, decree or order passed by that High Court.
Article 350 entitles every person to submit a representation for the redress of a grievance in any of the languages used in the Union or in the State.
Article 350A makes it the endeavour of every State and of every local authority to provide facilities for instruction in the mother-tongue at the primary stage to children of linguistic minority groups.
Article 350B provides for a Special Officer for linguistic minorities, appointed by the President, who reports to the President on the safeguards for linguistic minorities.

Why it matters for exams: Part XVII is a reliable source of one-mark questions, and the division between Hindi for the Union and English for the courts and the statute book is the heart of it.
