Canada gives royal assent to the Final Self-Government Agreement for the Tlegohli Got'ine Act
8 October 2026
Bill C-27, the Final Self-Government Agreement for the Tlegohli Got'ine Act, has received royal assent and become Statutes of Canada 2026, chapter 23. The Act gives legal effect to a self-government agreement negotiated with the Tlegohli Got'ine, an Indigenous community of Canada's Northwest Territories, and makes consequential amendments to other federal laws. The bill was sponsored by the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and introduced in the House of Commons in March 2026. It passed third reading in the Commons in June and cleared the Senate in October before assent. Self-government agreements of this kind transfer law-making powers over matters such as language, culture, lands and local administration from federal and territorial governments to an Indigenous government. The Act is part of a long line of modern treaties and self-government statutes Canada has enacted since the 1970s.
