Statistics Canada has released findings from its Census of Environment on what it calls ecosystem provisioning services, meaning the biomass that nature supplies as crops, livestock, fish and timber. Agricultural ecosystems produced 146.6 million tonnes of biomass in 2025. Field crops alone reached a record 109.3 million tonnes, 11 per cent above the previous year. Vegetable output came to 8.2 million tonnes, with Alberta's production more than doubling since 2002, while Quebec's fruit harvest nearly tripled over the same period. Forests supplied 118.4 million tonnes of timber in 2024, about 46 per cent of commercially harvested biomass, down from more than 70 per cent in 2002. Maple syrup production was 113.5 kilotonnes in 2025. Sea fishery landings fell to 613 kilotonnes in 2024, the lowest since 2002, and shellfish aquaculture came to 37.6 kilotonnes, with Prince Edward Island accounting for more than half.

The Bank of Canada has published its Monetary Policy Report for October 2026, the quarterly document in which it sets out its outlook for the Canadian economy. The report projects that growth will strengthen to 2 per cent in both 2027 and 2028. On prices, it says inflation remains around 3 per cent at present and is expected to stay above 3 per cent through much of 2027 before coming back close to 2 per cent by the middle of 2028. The 2 per cent figure is the inflation-control target the Bank and the federal government set jointly; it is the midpoint of a 1 to 3 per cent control range first adopted in 1991 and reviewed every five years. The Bank's policy interest rate is formally called the target for the overnight rate. The Monetary Policy Report is released alongside the Bank's scheduled interest rate announcements.

Bill C-27, the Final Self-Government Agreement for the Tlegohli Got'ine Act, has received royal assent and become Statutes of Canada 2026, chapter 23. The Act gives legal effect to a self-government agreement negotiated with the Tlegohli Got'ine, an Indigenous community of Canada's Northwest Territories, and makes consequential amendments to other federal laws. The bill was sponsored by the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and introduced in the House of Commons in March 2026. It passed third reading in the Commons in June and cleared the Senate in October before assent. Self-government agreements of this kind transfer law-making powers over matters such as language, culture, lands and local administration from federal and territorial governments to an Indigenous government. The Act is part of a long line of modern treaties and self-government statutes Canada has enacted since the 1970s.

Canada and Viet Nam have issued a joint statement elevating their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Mark Carney and To Lam, General Secretary of Viet Nam's Communist Party and President of Viet Nam, agreed on it in Ottawa during a State visit, the first by a Communist Party General Secretary since the two countries opened diplomatic relations in 1973. The partnership rests on eight pillars covering political cooperation, trade and investment, transport and supply chains, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, energy and environment, food security, defence and law enforcement, and education and people-to-people ties. The two sides signed memorandums of understanding on energy and on environmental cooperation, agreed to widen their air transport agreement to allow direct passenger and cargo flights, and backed both the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement and the CPTPP. Their combined agri-food and seafood trade was nearly CAN$1.7 billion in 2025. The statement notes that Canada is to host La Francophonie in 2028 and APEC in 2029.

The Conservative Party has won a majority in British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, and its leader Lorne Doerkson is set to become premier. Provisional results gave the Conservatives 64 of the 93 seats in the provincial legislature, against 27 for the New Democrats. It is the first provincial election the Conservatives have won in British Columbia since 1928. The vote was a snap election called by New Democrat premier David Eby, whose party had held power for nine years; Eby stepped down as party leader after the result. British Columbia is governed from Victoria, on Vancouver Island, while Vancouver is its largest city. The province is a centre of Canada's liquefied natural gas and forestry industries and handles much of the country's Pacific trade, so the change of government carries weight for federal energy and trade policy.

He is the first Canadian Space Agency astronaut to fly under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, and he will stay on the station for about six months. Kutryk, a colonel and former test pilot, was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and was one of two recruits chosen in the agency's fourth astronaut recruitment campaign in 2017. The Canadian Space Agency, whose headquarters is at Longueuil in Quebec, said Industry Minister Melanie Joly attended the launch. Background
Canada's central bank has just issued its Monetary Policy Report, so the institution behind it is worth knowing. The Bank of Canada has been in operation since 1935 and works under the Bank of Canada Act. The Act has been amended many times over, yet its preamble has never been touched: the Bank is there to keep the country's credit and its currency under control, for the good of the national economy. The Bank describes its work in five areas: monetary policy, the financial system, currency, funds management and regulatory oversight. Under currency it designs, issues and distributes the country's bank notes. Under funds management it looks after government accounts that hold public debt and foreign reserves. The inflation target it works to is set jointly by the Bank and the Government of Canada. Tiff Macklem is its 10th Governor, appointed on 3 June 2020 for a seven-year term.
