British Columbia's Conservatives win a majority and Lorne Doerkson is set to be premier

The Conservative Party has won a majority in British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, and its leader Lorne Doerkson is set to become premier. Provisional results gave the Conservatives 64 of the 93 seats in the provincial legislature, against 27 for the New Democrats. It is the first provincial election the Conservatives have won in British Columbia since 1928. The vote was a snap election called by New Democrat premier David Eby, whose party had held power for nine years; Eby stepped down as party leader after the result. British Columbia is governed from Victoria, on Vancouver Island, while Vancouver is its largest city. The province is a centre of Canada's liquefied natural gas and forestry industries and handles much of the country's Pacific trade, so the change of government carries weight for federal energy and trade policy.

Conservative seats: 64 New Democrat seats: 27 Seats in the legislature: 93 Previous Conservative win: 1928
Why it matters for exams: A provincial first - the Conservatives' first British Columbia win since 1928 - plus the province's capital Victoria and its 93-seat legislature are the durable facts.
