Delhi High Court declines plea for CBI probe in the Justice Yashwant Varma cash case

The Delhi High Court on Monday, 21 September 2026, declined to entertain a plea seeking an FIR and a CBI or SIT probe in the Justice Yashwant Varma cash case.
The plea was filed by advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay. Justice Amit Bansal called it a "wild witch hunt".
The petitioner then sought to withdraw the plea with liberty to pursue other legal remedies.
The case concerns cash found at Varma's official residence during a fire on 14 March 2025, when he was a Delhi High Court judge.
The Supreme Court had dismissed a similar plea by the same petitioner in August 2026.
Varma resigned in April 2026 while a Lok Sabha inquiry under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, was under way.

Judge hearing the plea: Justice Amit Bansal Date of the fire: 14 March 2025 Law for the Lok Sabha inquiry: Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968
Why it matters for exams: The procedure for removing High Court judges and the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, are standard polity questions, and this case is a live example.
