Established in 1906, it is one of the oldest institutions of its kind.
Its history is closely interwoven with the development of scientific forestry in India and in the Indian subcontinent as a whole.
The institute's estate is spread over 450 hectares, with the outer Himalaya forming its backdrop.
Its main building marries Greco-Roman and Colonial styles of architecture.
The campus holds laboratories, a library, a herbarium, arboreta, a printing press and experimental field areas.
