A Press Information Bureau release states that under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 the Gram Sabha has been assigned a substantial role in implementing the Act. The Gram Sabha initiates the process of determining the nature and extent of individual or community forest rights by receiving claims, consolidating and verifying them, preparing a map of each recommended claim and passing a resolution, a copy of which goes to the Sub-Divisional Level Committee. It is also tasked with protecting wildlife, forest and biodiversity under Section 5.
